The Labyrinth

Editorial Review
Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas's other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up. --Lloyd Chesley

The Rocketeer

Product Description
The discovery of a top-secret jetpack hurls test pilot Cliff Secord into a daring adventure of mystery, suspense, and intrigue! Cliff encounters an assortment of ruthless villains, led by a Hollywood screen star who's a secret Nazi spy (Timothy Dalton). With the help of his actress girlfriend, the young pilot battles enormous odds to defeat his foes who are anxious to use the device in an evil plan to rule the world! The dangerous mission transforms the ordinary young man into an extraordinary hero!
Editorial Reviews
Based on a retro-styled comic book hit of the '80s, this Disney film was meant to launch a whole line of Rocketeer films--but the series began and ended with this one. That's too bad, because this underrated Joe Johnston film has a certain loopy charm. The story centers on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest, but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp. --Marshall Fine

Pachelbel Rant - Rob Paravonian
A comedian rants about how much it sucks to play Pachelbel's Canon in D on a cello. Recorded live at Penn State, this piece by comedian/musician Rob Paravonian has been a favorite on the Dr. Demento Show.

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars
I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars
Look at me, look at me
hands in the air like it's good to be
ALIVE
and I'm a famous rapper
even when the paths're all crookedy
I can show you how to do-si-do
I can show you how to scratch a record
I can take apart the remote control
And I can almost put it back together
I can tie a knot in a cherry stem
I can tell you about Leif Ericson
I know all the words to "De Colores"
And "I'm Proud to be an American"
Me and my friend saw a platypus
Me and my friend made a comic book
And guess how long it took
I can do anything that I want cuz, look:
I can keep rhythm with no metronome
No metronome
No metronome
And I can see your face on the telephone
On the telephone
On the telephone
Look at me
Look at me
Just called to say that it's good to be
Alive
In such a small world
I'm all curled up with a book to read
I can make money open up a thrift store
I can make a living off a magazine
I can design an engine sixty four
Miles to a gallon of gasoline
I can make new antibiotics
I can make computers survive aquatic conditions
I know how to run a business
I can make you wanna buy a product
Movers shakers and producers
Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the systems
I can do anything with no assistance
Cuz I can lead a nation with a microphone
With a microphone
With a microphone
And I can split the atom of a molecule
Of a molecule
Of a molecule
Look at me
Look at me
Driving and I won't stop
And it feels so good to be
Alive and on top
My reach is global
My tower secure
My cause is noble
My power is pure
I can hand out a million vaccinations
Or let'em all die in exasperation
Have'em all healed of their lacerations
Have'em all killed by assassination
I can make anybody go to prison
Just because I don't like'em and
I can do anything with no permission
I have it all under my command
Because I can guide a missile by satellite
By satellite
By satellite
And I can hit a target through a telescope
Through a telescope
Through a telescope
And I can end the planet in a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
I can ride my bike with no handlebars

The 5th Grade
A story that was passed on to me (A Must Read!) ~
As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.
Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers.
At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his fi le, she was in for a surprise.
Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners... he is a joy to be around.."
His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."
His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest, and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."
Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class."
By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, toda y you smelled jus t like my Mom used to."
After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to T eddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets.."
A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.
Six years we nt by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life.
Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life.
Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little fur ther. Th e letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teache r he ever had. But now his name was a little longer.... The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.
The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered h is mother wearing on their last Christmas together.
They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, "Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference."
Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, "Teddy, you have it all w rong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you."
(For you that don't know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr. at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.)
Warm someone's heart today. . . pass this along. I love this story so very much, I cry every time I read it. Just try to make a difference in someone's life today? tomorrow? just "do it".
Random acts of kindness, I think they call it!

Tears Say
A few months ago, I went to the funeral of a distant family member.
I did not know the man very well. He was my (ex)brother in-law's step father. I went to support my nieces and nephew.
It was a very nice funeral.
I was set on not crying. After all, I didn't hardly know the guy. But...I am a sensitive person and I ended up crying any ways.
It wasn't so much my mourning or my respect for the man. It was more because of the quality of the words that where spoken and sung.
His daughter in-law got up and gave an excellent talk in which she said, "Tears say things that words can not express." And I thought, wow! How true is that!
She went on to say that words can never describe or express what tears have the authority to show. Tears are words of the spirit. Words of respect, admiration, and gratitude. We cry tears because that person is a part of us. Their lives have changed us on such a deep level. Their lives effect us forever and eternally. Tears can only begin to show that respect.
And from there on out, I was a basket case.
After her talk, his daughter got up and sang a wonderful song (in which she could not contain herself).
It was beautiful!
Who Hates Hair?
Ok, so...
I hate my hair.
*scratch that
I hate dealing with my hair.
I have a pretty nice head of hair, but I just hate having to deal with it. I hate waking up in the morning with a messy head of hair. Especially when you can't get your hair down with water and it's all sticking up. Frustrating if not embarrassing. lol
My solution is to keep my hair looong during the fall and winter (so long that it doesn’t stand up on end - which I like) and then in the spring and summer, I just shave it all off. It's nice.
I just shaved my hair yesterday and for some reason, I feel more like myself. : D
It’s cool! I look like a biker or something. I’ve got my bald head and a goatee. I look pretty tough, if I do say so myself. ; )
Ok, so...I shaved my hair yesterday and I jumped in the shower and proceeded to wash my hair, and...there was nothing there. LOL!!!
I had to laugh at myself.
So, I proceeded to transfer the shampoo to places with hair. lol Like, under my arm pits. ; )
FYI: Wanna save money? I saved over $70 last year from not having to get my hair cut.
Cost: $10 for low cost trimmers. I've found, if you maintain them, they last pretty long. At least a good 10 trims if not more. I would assume if you got a more expensive trimmer, it would last even longer.
Ahhh...the benefits of being a guy. lol
The Touch Of The Master's Hands
The Touch of the Master’s Hand
'Twas battered and scarred, and the old auctioneer
thought it scarcely worth his while
to waste much time on the old violin,
but he still held it up with a smile:
"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar"; then, "Two!" "Only two?
Two dollars, and who'll make it three?
Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
going for three ..." but no.
From the room far back, a gray-haired man
came forward and picked up the bow;
then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
and tightening the loose strings,
he played a melody pure and sweet
as a caroling angels sing.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
with a voice that was quiet and low,
said; "What am I bidden for the old violin?"
And he held it up with the bow.
"A thousand! And who'll make it two?
Two thousand! And who'll make it three?
Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice,
and going, and gone," said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
"We do not quite understand
what changed it's worth?" Swift came the reply:
"The touch of the master's hand."
And many a man with life out of tune,
and battered and scarred with sun,
is auctioned cheep to the thoughtless crowd,
much like this old violin.
A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine;
a game; and he travels on.
He is "going" once, "going" twice,
He's "going" and almost "gone."
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
never can quite understand
the worth of a soul and the change that's wrought
by the touch of the Master's hand.

A Personal Hobby
I would like to introduce everyone to a personal hobby of mine.
I love making videos.
I made a video for the Search & Rescue and submitted it to our school Reflections contest. It won on three levels, along with a photograph I took of a wagon wheel (symbolizing the pioneer's courage and strength for having crossed hundreds of miles of uncharted wilderness) - they both won regional. The theme of the contest was Signs Of Courage.
At one point I considered being a video producer, but I would much rather have this as a hobby. I wouldn't want to make it work. That would take all the fun out of it.
I set this slideshow to a favorite song of mine.
I hope you enjoy.
The Prayer Of The Children
The Prayer of the Children
By Kurt Bestor and Sam Cardon
Can you hear the prayer of the children?
On bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room
Empty eyes with no more tears to cry
Turning heavenward toward the light
Crying jesus, help me
To see the morning light-of one more day
But if i should die before i wake,
I pray my soul to take
Can you feel the hearts of the children?
Aching for home, for something of their very own
Reaching hands, with nothing to hold on to,
But hope for a better day a better day
Crying jesus, help me
To feel the love again in my own land
But if unknown roads lead away from home,
Give me loving arms, away from harm
Can you hear the voice of the children?
Softly pleading for silence in a shattered world?
Angry guns preach a gospel full of hate,
Blood of the innocent on their hands
Crying jesus, help me
To feel the sun again upon my face,
For when darkness clears i know you're near,
Bringing peace again
Dali cujete sve djecje molitive?
(croatian translation:
'can you hear all the children's prayers?')
Can you hear the prayer of the children?
My Senses
*I love these lyrics! : )
I Was Brought To My Senses
By Sting
Album: Mercury Falling
Intro ~
Alone with my thoughts this evening
I walked on the banks of Tyne
I wondered how I could win you
Or if I could make you mine
Or if I could make you mine
The wind it was so insistent
With tales of a stormy south
But when I spied two birds in a sycamore tree
There came a dryness in my mouth
Came a dryness in my mouth
For then without rhyme or reason
The two birds did rise up to fly
And where the two birds were flying
I swear I saw you and I
I swear I saw you and I
I walked out this morning
It was like a veil had been removed from
Before my eyes
For the first time I saw the work of heaven
In the line where the hill had been
Married to the sky
And all around me every blade of singing grass
Was calling out your name and that
Our love would always last
And inside every turning leaf
Is the pattern of an older tree
The shape of our future
The shape of all our history
And out of the confusion
Where the river meets the sea
Came things I'd never seen
Things I'd never seen
I was brought to my senses
I was blind but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me
I know it's true
It's written in a sky as blue
As blue as your eyes, as blue as your eyes
If nature's red in tooth and claw
Like winter's freeze and summer's thaw
The wounds she gave me
Were the wounds that would heal me
And we'd be like the moon and sun
And when our courtly dance had run
Its course across the sky
Then together we would lie
And out of the confusion
Where the river meets the sea
Something new would arrive
Something better would arrive
I was brought to my senses
I was blind but now that I can see
Every signpost in nature
Said you belong to me
Hurt
Another favorite of mine - Hurt by Johnny Cash
The original song was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nines. The Johnny Cash version is a cover song, though I'm sure he identifies with it as if it were his own. I love this song because it is so true. We can accomplish our dreams in life, but what does it really matter in the end?
I would have to say...it's the family, friends and relationships that we cultivate. All the prizes, accomplishments, and trophies mean nothing if you don't have your family and friends in the end.
Enjoy -
Side note:
I also really like the Johnny Cash movie Walk The Line.
This movie is an amazing depiction of what Johnny Cash went through and experienced. Very enjoyable, but very disturbing in parts. Sometimes when you fulfill your deepest desires in life, they can take you over like a run-away train.
But with any bad thing in life, it can be over come.
